About

An honest map of where Virginians walk and run

Discover Virginia running paths, greenways, trail runs, day hikes, and long-distance routes by area, distance, terrain, difficulty, and experience.

Virginia is unusually varied for its size. In a single day you can run a flat oceanfront boardwalk at sunrise and be standing on a Blue Ridge overlook by afternoon. Most trail listings flatten that variety into star ratings and crowd-sourced mileage. This directory takes a different approach: each entry describes the terrain, the surface underfoot, the access logistics, and the conditions that decide whether a route is a good idea today.

How entries are built

Trail attributes come from the agency that manages the land — the National Park Service, the US Forest Service, Virginia State Parks, the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, and city and county parks departments. Each entry links back to its source, and each carries the date it was last checked.

Where a number has not been confirmed against a source, the directory prints "Not yet verified" rather than filling the gap with an estimate. That is deliberate: an invented distance or difficulty rating is worse than an admitted gap when someone is deciding what to carry.

What this is not

This is not navigation software and should not be your only map in the backcountry. Route lines and coordinates are approximate and intended for orientation and planning. Carry an offline topographic map and know how to use it.

It is also not a review site. There are no star ratings, because a five-star trail in perfect October weather can be a genuinely dangerous choice in February ice.

Corrections

Conditions change constantly — bridges wash out, parking lots close, springs run dry. If you find something wrong or out of date, send a correction. Reports are reviewed against the managing agency before anything changes.
