Parking
A parking fee is charged year-round at all Virginia State Parks, and DCR's fees table lists Kiptopeke at $7 per day. The trail guide directs visitors to self-pay parking information at the contact station and to park in designated areas only. Boat-trailer parking at the launch is limited to 70 trailers. Campsites allow two motor vehicles plus the camping unit; additional vehicles pay the parking fee and use the park's overflow parking area, as do extra vehicles for yurt and bunkhouse guests. Accessible parking as published on the park page: two universally accessible spaces at the Bald Eagle Bluff Walkway's entrance, two handicapped-only spaces at picnic shelter 1 and one at shelter 2, two at the boat ramp, one at the fishing pier and one by the Wood Warbler Boardwalk. DCR does not state in text which other facilities have parking lots.
Water
DCR lists water hydrants and a drink machine near both picnic shelters, and the camp store sells drinks during its season. No water source is shown or described along the trail routes themselves in the trail guide, the facility guide or the park page, so carry what you need, particularly for the boardwalk and beach sections.

  • Both Chesapeake Bay beaches are unguarded. DCR states that swimmers using these areas do so at their own risk, and that swimming cannot be guaranteed should circumstances beyond the park's control require prohibiting it.
  • Shared use: DCR's trail guide marks all eight blazed trails and the Bay Overlook for both hiking and biking, so expect cyclists. The park page separately names only the entrance road and the Raptor, Songbird, Chickadee and Mockingbird trails as bicycle trails. Where the two official statements differ, assume bikes may be present on any blazed trail.
  • The four boardwalks (Bald Eagle, Osprey, Peregrine, Wood Warbler) and the Bay Overlook carry no blaze at all in DCR's trail guide table. Use the printed park map or DCR's geo-referenced Avenza map rather than relying on trail markers.
  • DCR publishes no water source along the trail routes; the nearest hydrants it names are by the picnic shelters. Carry water.
  • The park is open to day use from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Plan to be off the trails before closing.
  • Pets are not allowed at the north beach swimming area and must be kept on a leash no longer than six feet at all times elsewhere in the park.
  • Motorized vehicles are not permitted on park trails. DCR does allow electric wheelchairs and electric scooters that meet the federal definition for wheelchairs, so that people with disabilities can use the trails.
  • Access from the south requires crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, which DCR notes has a substantial each-way toll charge.
