About this route

Belle Isle sits in the middle of the James River rapids, reached by a suspended footbridge under the Lee Bridge. Its loop combines gravel path, rock slabs, and dirt singletrack with views of class-III whitewater downtown.

The wider James River Park System extends this on both banks — Buttermilk, North Bank, and the Northbank connections give Richmond a genuinely technical trail-running network inside the city limits.

River levels matter. After heavy rain, low sections flood and the rocks become dangerous; check the park system's status before heading out.

Why this difficulty rating: Short but uneven: exposed granite, roots, and rock steps. Wet rock is slick and river levels change conditions.

Highlights

  • Whitewater views downtown
  • Suspension footbridge access
  • Connects to a citywide network
