About this route
False Cape is one of the last undeveloped stretches of Atlantic coast in the mid-Atlantic, and reaching it is part of the experience: there is no direct road access, so visitors travel several miles through Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge first.
Once inside, sand and dirt routes lead between the bay and the ocean beach. Plan for a long day, carry all your water, and check refuge access rules before you go — seasonal restrictions apply.
Why this difficulty rating: Flat, but long approach distances on soft sand with no shade and no water on route.
Highlights
- Undeveloped Atlantic beach
- True remoteness inside a major metro
- Primitive camping
